I haven’t been to a yoga class although some of these descriptions could very well be me, “The Grunter.”  I think I will first practice at home so I hopefully do not exhibit any of these character traits.

Flu Season

The flu season is near with the dreaded symptoms that prevent you from engaging with life.  In your efforts to prevent the flu, there are new studies that show Vitamin D is better than vaccines.

Keys to a happier, healthier life

Research suggests that certain personal attributes—whether inborn or shaped by positive life circumstances—help some people avoid or healthfully manage diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and depression. These include:

  • Emotional vitality: a sense of enthusiasm, hopefulness, engagement
  • Optimism: the perspective that good things will happen, and that one’s actions account for the good things that occur in life
  • Supportive networks of family and friends

Are you allergic to eating?

Food sensitivities affect many people with symptoms presenting themselves as digestive issues, skin issues, wheezing and runny noses.  Additional symptoms might include fatigue, gas, bloating, mood swings, nervousness, migraines and eating disorders.  I have lived with food sensitivity since I was a child due to IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome) — sugar, chocolate, caffeine, onions, milk, fried foods, and artificial sweeteners are my triggers.  Easter, Halloween, and Christmas were difficult times to not indulge in the delectable treats of the season.

The FAAN (The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) shares the following food allergy facts and statistics for the United States below:

  • Food allergy is a growing public health concern.
  • As many as 15 million people have food allergies. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    • An estimated 9 million, or 4%, of adults have food allergies. 2, 3, 5
    • Nearly 6 million or 8% of children have food allergies with young children affected most. 3, 4, 6, 7, 8
  • Boys appear to develop food allergies more than girls. 5
  • Food allergies may be a trigger for or associated with other allergic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis9 and eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases. 10
  • Although childhood allergies to milk11, egg12, wheat13 and soy14 generally resolve in childhood, they appear to be resolving more slowly than in previous decades, with many children still allergic beyond age 5 years. Allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, or shellfish15 are generally lifelong allergies.

To begin healing, it is advisable to eliminate the food irritant from your diet and to focus on diet and nutrition to begin your journey to being healthy.  My investigation with this topic stems from health issues I’ve been dealing with — skin issues and tiredness (more than just not getting enough sleep the night before).  I’ve noticed since I have begun taking supplements specific to skin and energy related issues, these two concerns have improved greatly.

The rate of change has never been so fast.  Many of the older generation may well feel that they are increasingly out of touch with this strange new world, left struggling to keep up with the pace of modern life.

Everything is different.  Many may come to feel that they are strangers in their own land, in danger of becoming isolated and marginalised.  In the face of so much new technology it is hardly surprising that there is a tendency to retreat to the old familiar, to call time on progress and miss out on the wonderful opportunities that would enrich their lives.

To Be or Not to Be?

Can you relate to “spontaneity can be obtained as long as it’s planned”?  I was talking to a friend when this behavior trait came to me.  As an aside, right now my dog wants me to be spontaneous and play instead of writting this blog.  Getting back on track, for those of us that prefer more structure, how to relate to the unfamiliar behavior of being spontaneous?

I really enjoyed reading this blog structure:spontaneity about needing both spontaneity and structure in our lives…be sure to read the comments too.

Another intriguing post on this topic is from Taking it to the Streets comparing two different viewpoints from Steven Covey and Leo Babuta.  Reflect on the three questions posted at the bottom of this blog and answer them for yourself.  Also, be sure to read the great comments left on this blog too.

Nature also shows how structure and spontaneity can work together. A river usually flows in a specific channel that is structured and narrow, but constantly changing depending on the flow or amount of water present. The river opens up to the sea which is open and unstructured.

I hope you find the beautiful energy of the song below to correspond with a river’s dynamic features to incorporate structure and change in the same instance to connect its life force with another larger body of water.

Harvest Moon and Renewal

I’ve noticed the past few nights, but this morning in particular the beautiful full moon that is still present in the sky.  It seems we are experiencing the Full Harvest Moon Phase that began on September 29.  Joe Rao, skywatching columnist for space.com provides some history about the Full Harvest Moon.  He states traditionally the full harvest moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal (Fall) Equinox.  At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.  With the technology available for farmers today, working by the light of the moon is less needed.

I’ve also taken notice of  the glorious colors of the autumn leaves displaying rich hues of red, orange, amber and gold.  Autumn is a wonderful time with crisp cool air and the leaves crunching under your feet.  Do you also feel the temperature outside is perfect to walk, hike or partake in any activity you enjoy while appreciating the transition of seasons?  Autumn for me is a time of  renewal and self-reflection.

The 10-Step Life Renewal Plan

Ask yourself these questions to figure out what’s working, reject what’s not, and move toward your best decade yet.

1. Does the way you spend your time reflect what’s important to you? Make a list of your top five priorities – marriage, children, volunteer work, and so on – and track how many hours you devote to each in a week. If any numbers are too low, recalculate your time budget so you can live according to who you want to be.

2. Does your Blackberry get more attention than your family and friends? Resolve to switch off your gadgets during private moments so you can nourish personal connections with complete focus.

3. Are you nursing a grudge or two? Let bygones be bygones, and free yourself from the emotions that weigh you down.

4. Who should be in your life? Phase out any so-called friends who offer only criticism and negative energy. Surround yourself with people you admire, who believe in you and want you to succeed.

5. Have you typecast yourself? You may cherish your responsibilities as a mother, but “Mom” is not the whole of who you are. Ask yourself if one role is draining all your energy, leaving other expressions of your authentic self unfulfilled.

6. What battle are you fighting? Is your husband really the one who’s letting you down, or are you blaming him for the pain of a past relationship? Are you doing what’s best for your kid, or are you parenting with a chip on your shoulder left over from your own childhood? Remember: You are not a prisoner of your legacy.

7. How can you live greener? Can you swap your gas guzzler for public transportation? Trade plastic bottles for a thermos? Go meatless once a week? Pinpoint changes you can make now.

8. What are your goals? Define specific goals with measurable outcomes and assign yourself a timeline. Passion and will-power alone won’t cut it – you need a strategy.

9. Who is standing in your way? The answer may be you. Reject self-loathing and treat yourself with the kindness and respect you would show your best friend.

10. What one thing can you do for yourself every day? It could be as simple as finding 20 minutes to take a bath.  Every day is a new opportunity to pay attention to your own needs and make choices you feel good about. This decade, claim the right to minister to yourself.

Getting to Balanced

To feel complete as a person all the pieces of the wellness wheel needs to be fulfilled. Why?  Our lives are so busy, we have work demands and family needs to take care of and typically devote a smaller portion of our time to the other facets of our life.  If we allow ourselves to become so run down and not recharge our battery, small potholes encountered might seem like large ruts.  Tempers might flare a bit more easily.  The three inner properties — mind, body, and soul interconnect with our health, purpose in life, relationships, and finances.  If any of these properties are out of balance so will you.

… people who are always busy are time poor. They have a time shortage. They have time debt. They are either trying to do too much, or they aren’t doing what they’re doing very well.
